Artist Donald G. Krohn .....

Donald G Krohn

Donald G. Krohn began painting and drawing his world as a youngster, winning a scholarship to the children’s program at the Chicago Art Institute where he spent Saturday mornings in the classrooms and Saturday afternoons in the galleries.

Donald earned his diploma in commercial art from the American Academy of Art studying the fundamentals of art with William Mosby (illustration), Antonin Sterba (life drawing) and others. He was proficient with acrylic, oil, pen and ink, pastel and watercolor.

While studying at the American Academy, Donald fell in love with portraiture especially loving the challenge of catching the essence of his subject with brushwork. He was particularly inspired by the work of John Singer Sargent and Nikolai Fechin, artists who were masters of the fundamentals but were able to take portraiture beyond the photographic into an emotional expression.

After completing his formal study, Donald worked as a portrait artist in the Southwest and then returned to Chicago to open his own portrait studio. Later he worked as a commercial artist in advertising agencies and studios, as a freelance artist and in the Chicago Tribune art department. During his commercial period, he continued portrait painting in the George Sotos Workshops at the Tree Studios and with Walter Parke at the Palette and Chisel Academy.

Donald passed away in the spring of 2016. We miss him dearly.
