Artist Albert D. Schmiege .....

Albert Schmiege

In the past 5 years, Albert has went from being a local obscure artist to achieving national recognition. In 1992, he was declared legally blind and could not drive due to macular degeneration.  In 2005, while employed as a massage therapist at the Kalahari Resort, he exhibited his art for the first time at the Memorial Union Galleries in Madison, Wisconsin. Since then, Albert has been featured in numerous newspaper articles as well as local television interviews.

Most recently, with the help of art sales at the Red Geranium, a partial travel grant and donations, he was able to attend the Shared Visions Show last year in southern California.  This show is exclusively for blind and visually impaired artists and is renowned internationally. On opening night, over 400 people attended.  Only 4 pieces sold, one of which was an Albert Schmiege original!

Albert works exclusively in oils on canvas. His subject matter includes abstracts, florals, landscapes and basically anything he can visualize in his head. Recent commissioned works include 3-D tactile pieces and paintings inspired by your favorite song or CD. Many of his works are incorporated into the seasonal displays at the Red Geranium.

Through his art, Albert has raised awareness and funding for the VSA Arts of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired and most recently, Occupaws, a Madison-based guide dog service for the blind. Currently, he has several paintings on display at an internationally juried show in Fullerton, CA.
